In 2015, Ch’ng Chin Leng graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with Bachelor of Arts (Business Administration) with First Class Honours. While pursuing his study, he has undergone an internship at a furniture company in Nibong Tebal, Penang (woodworking plant and metalworking plant) that 100% export to overseas.
After he graduated, he joined the company as a production controller. He was fully responsible for the plan, formulate, organises, control and direct factory operation and daily production activities. In his position, he had to work closely with people of different nationalities and with diverse culture. As the leader of the operation, it is a must for him to provide vision and leadership to ensure all operational guidelines, safety compliance and protocols are adhered to, productivity standards are maintained and continuous improvements, as well as new ways of operating, are part of the culture. He also has been exposed to a different kind of woodworking machines/software such as European brand – Homag, SCM and Biesse and also some metalworking machines.
He also provided the direction and leadership to develop and promote 5S and Lean continuous improvement culture within the production plants.
In the year 2016, the company had saved around RM4.7 million through the first Lean project. The next year, they had saved more than RM900,000 through the basic implementation of Industry 4.0. Both lean projects were competed and won the champion in the Lean Creanova held by Malaysia Timber Industry Board and another Lean Creanova by Malaysia Productivity Council in 2017. Before he joins LMA, he has a short time with a Japanese furniture company in Ipoh, Perak. He was responsible to help them set up a whole new production line in the new factory.
He believes that PEOPLE is the only key to practice and implement Lean Manufacturing in any organisation. The success of any new lean project is largely depending on the strength and abilities of the people who execute it and a strong leader who can engage and motivate others to overcome obstacles, think out of the box and complete different tasks together.
